Our Lady of Fatima
Shrine, Lewiston, NY will be hosting its Twenty-first Annual Festival of
Lights from November 19, 2011 to January 6, 2012. The lights are on every
evening from 5p.m. until 9 pm. This year we will present a new Magi
(Three Kings) Display! A great family event featuring a nine-foot
illuminate angel gazing over super-life-size Nativity scene with over 50
other displays celebrating Christ, the Prince of Peace. Admissions is
free. The Cafeteria and gift shop are open until 9:00 pm during the
Festival. Lights only on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The figures of the
Nativity, some over nine feet high, as well as numerous other illuminated
decorations, have been designed by Father Julio Ciavaglia, Rector of the
Shrine and a native son of Niagara Falls and have been fabricated locally
in the shops at Fatima Shrine. These symbols as well as well as the
beautiful glass dome basilica light up 15 acres of gardens. Father Julio
(as he is widely known), has over the years designed many varied and
different Nativity scenes, remarkable often for their including themes of
contemporary importance and urgency. Indeed, over the years he has found
this particular type of creative work as very meaningful in his personal.
"I was encouraged," says Father Julio, "to undertake the realizing of
these monumental figures, by the talents, skills and industriousness of
our workers here at the Shrine." Following Father Julio's designs, they
constructed the enormous figures out of steel rods, and then covered them
with thousands of multi-colored lights, bringing the figures to life. The
construction work occupied some six months in the Shrine's shops. Each
year new figures and scenes are added.
